California Bill Would Broaden Definition of Personal Data

California lawmakers have introduced legislation that would expand the state’s definition of personal data, potentially tightening breach disclosure rules for companies gathering California residents’ information. So reports CNN.

Under the bill, notification would be required for breaches involving passports, passport numbers and green card numbers, plus fingerprints and other biometric data. The state’s current consumer protections exempt companies from disclosure requirements if just passport numbers were exposed.
