Governments Using COVID-19 Data for Other Purposes

Singapore officials promised COVID-19 data would be used only for containing the virus. However, it has turned up in police investigations. This development could be a harbinger for other countries’ exploitation of such data. So reports Bloomberg.

covid 4948866 640smallPhil Robertson, the deputy director in Asia for Human Rights Watch, told the news service that “Singapore is saying to other governments, with a wink and a nod, that we’ve done it and you can do it too.”

Troy Hunt, founder of data breach aggregator Have I Been Pwned, added that governments’ use of COVID-19 data for other purposes could discourage people from participating in track-and-trace programs intended to slow the pandemic.
