Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) said during a hearing of the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s subcommittee on consumer protection, which she chairs, that she is concerned Facebook’s policy would still permit much “misinformation.” That includes a manipulated video of Nancy Pelosi that circulated online last year.
Schakowsky noted that Facebook’s freshly unveiled ban on deepfakes would apply only to clips that are altered using artificial intelligence or deep learning techniques. Facebook’s vice president of global policy management, Monika Bickert, responded in the hearing that the Pelosi clip “would still be subject to our other policies that address misinformation.”
