Experts Downplay Cyberattacks on Taiwan Around Pelosi’s Visit  

Many information security professionals have dismissed the significance of a cyberattack that hit Taiwan just before the visit of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), with some indicating the work was by “hacktivists” rather than a full-fledged campaign by the Chinese government. So reports The Washington Post.

Pelosi2While Taiwan said an alleged distributed denial-of-service attack took down the website of its presidential office, some cybersecurity pros indicated that the outage might have actually been due to a traffic spike from the busy news day rather than any attack.

Cybersecurity pros stressed that Taiwan and the United States should still not get a false sense of security, with Mandiant predicting that Chinese cyber-spying efforts would now go into “overdrive.”
