California Gun Data Breach Was Accidental, Probe Finds  

An investigation has concluded that the California Department of Justice’s online publication of the names, addresses and birthdays of almost 200,000 gun owners over the summer was inadvertent. So reports Insurance Journal.

gun g2da07ea8e 640The inquiry, handled by an outside law firm, concluded that state officials believed they were publishing anonymous information and didn’t know how to properly secure the data.

The state’s attorney general, Rob Bonta, apologized in a statement, saying, “This was more than an exposure of data, it was a breach of trust that falls far short of my expectations and the expectations Californians have of our department.”
